Francis Smyre was said to have first settled here in 1871 after purchasing land so he could build a home for he and his new bride. Their son Clinton would become the first child to be born in what is today Conover. The community would prosper in part because it was situated at the junction of Southern Railway tracks and a feeder line that ran to Newton, three miles to the south

Parks and Recreation

Conover serves its citizens in part by maintaining eight municipal parks. The largest of these facilities is Conover City Park, which is 6.75 acres in size. The splash pad is a popular destination for families with younger children on those warm summer days. An assortment of hiking trails meander through the park and past wetlands. Picnic areas and playgrounds are found here as well. Washington/Southwest Park, 2.21 acres in size, features a baseball diamond, basketball court and recreation equipment. Majestic Park covers almost four acres in the southwest part of the city. The two-acre Downtown Park includes a gazebo, playground and hiking trails.

Attractions and Activities

Downtown Conover is the heart of the city center. The warm and welcoming community is complete with a quaint historic downtown district. The downtown offers residents the opportunity to visit charming shops and boutiques as well as a diverse array of restaurants.

Those in Conover NC homes that love golf will find many courses to play in this part of the state. Conover itself is home of the Rock Barn Golf Resort and Spa, nestled in the foothills of the BlueRidge Mountains. This amenity-laden resort hosts a Champions Tour golf event each year on its Robert Trent Jones Jr. layout that first opened in 2003. The course measures over 7,000 yards in length, and no course in North Carolina exceeds its course rating of 145. The other eighteen was the first of the courses here, and it opened in 1969. It also sports an impressive course rating of 140.

Events

New Residents may want to visit The Conover Farmer's Market provides Catawba Valley with the best locally grown and produced products. Open weekly on saturdays from 8am -12pm the market offers a different approach to other markets. The Conover Farmer's Market focuses on vendors providing products 'from the farmer to your table.'

In the fall new residents will discover a special Holiday Market in November which provides residents with lots of Christmas Crafts, Hot Food, Live Music, Holiday Baked Goods as well as Fresh Local Produce and holiday cheer.

Through out the year residents will also find free concerts performed in the Conover Downtown Park, Christmas in July and The Annual National Night Out, as well as many other events and celebrations.

In the fall, owners of Conover real estate can take a quick drive west on the interstate to Hickory and the Octoberfest celebration. This three-day festival is one of the major events in the county each year. Live music is found on three stages. Dozens of food vendors, craft exhibits, and a carnival all add to the festive nature of Octoberfest. Competition heats up among artisans during the juried art show.
