Newton, North Carolina, is a community of about 14,000 citizens situated in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains, northwest of Charlotte. Newton is the county seat of Catawba County. History​​​​​​​

​​​​​​​Early development of the community was centered around the county courthouse that was built in 1843. The court square bustled with activity as storefronts appeared near the courthouse. The railroad arrived just prior to the Civil War. After reconstruction, the Gilded Age heralded in a new era of expansion and industrialization. The textile and furniture industries would employ many of Newton's citizens for many decades.

Parks and Recreation

Newton advances the beauty of the community and the quality of life for residents through a diverse and comprehensive program of recreational, educational, and cultural programs for both old and young alike. The City Parks & Recreation Department maintains five parks, a swimming pool, two recreation centers with gymnasiums, and a fitness center. The department also sponsors many athletic and entertainment activities throughout the year.

Of the numerous parks which Newton offers residents the largest one by far is Jacob Fork Park. This 100-acre park includes a canoe/kayak launch. The softball fields are complemented by bleachers, concession stands and dugouts. The 27-acre Southside Park is located behind the National Guard Armory. Its extensive facilities include an open air amphitheater, a mile-long hiking trail, picnic shelters, ball field, soccer area and play area. Those that live in Newton homes can also enjoy two sand volleyball courts here. Northside/Broyhill Park encompasses 12 acres. It includes a lighted ball field, youth baseball and soccer fields, lighted tennis courts and a basketball court. Look for a 0.5 mile hiking trail here as well.

Events

Many that live in Newton NC homes look forward to the community's major event, the Soldiers Reunion Parade. Citizens stake out their spots along the parade route with lawn chairs a day or more ahead of time. This mid-August event actually begins days before the parade with a "Cruisin Car Show" on the Sunday before the Thursday parade. On Monday, there's the Gospel Music Night, and Tuesday brings Beach Music Night. On Wednesday, there's a street dance. The parade itself last about ninety minutes. On the following Saturday a 5k run is held, and Sunday brings a 100-mile "Century" Bike Ride.
