Lenoir, North Carolina, is a community in the western portion of the state. The approximately 19,000 residents of Lenoir enjoy life nestled in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains. The Brushy Mountains are also found in the area. In fact, Hibriten Mountain is the westernmost of the Brushy Mountains, and it is situated within the Lenoir city limits. Lenoir won an All-America City Award in 2008.
The city parks in Lenoir include J.E. Broyhill Park. This 9.4-acre facility on Ridge Street features modern play areas, a paved walking trail, picnic facilities and a basketball court. It is not far from Lenoir's downtown historic district.

Its extensive facilities include an open air amphitheater, a mile-long hiking trail, picnic shelters, ball field, soccer area and play area. It includes a lighted ball field, youth baseball and soccer fields, lighted tennis courts and a basketball court. Look for a 0.5 mile hiking trail here as well.

Hibriten Mountain is located just east of Lenoir and marks the western end of the Brushy Mountains range. The mountain's summit peaks at nearly 1,000 feet above the surrounding terrain. The summit is well known to Lenoir residents for its large welcome light which glows at night in the shape of a star in the weeks before Christmas and a cross before Easter.
Many residents enjoy the downtown area. Here residents can stroll along the quaint walkways lined with sculptures from local artists and visit charming local boutiques, restaurants and coffee shops. While in the downtown area residents can take a break and enjoy one of the many restaurants or take in an open-air performance at the stage on The Square, or a production at the beloved Main Street Theater.

History Days is one such event that many residents look forward to. In late October of each year, Fort Defiance hosts its Living History Days. Craftsmen in 18th century attire put on demonstrations, and skilled interpreters teach visitors about life in the area around the year 1800.
